Our Favorite 1968 Dodge Charger

This 1968 Dodge Charger was built by Steve Stropes for Pro Touring Chrysler Mopar. The interior of this prototypical Charger has a 1967 layout with four bucket seats and red upholstery. The engine is a large 528 cubic-inch HEMI, and Jamie Passon of Passon Performance built the transmission.

The creator of custom cars never fails to astound.

Shawn Davis, the cast of AutotopiaLA, Chris, Paul, and Kyle visit Pure Vision Design to check out Steve Stropes’ most recent Mopar build in one of the show’s more unusual episodes. The Pro Touring Chrysler Mopar cars driven by Steve Strope and Matt Delaney are well-known for being the front-runners. All it takes to realize this, if you didn’t already, is to look at this absolutely stunning 1968 Dodge Charger.

The interior is extremely distinctive and appears to be almost original. The interior of this prototypical Charger has a 1967 layout with four bucket seats, a long center console, and red upholstery, but that is far from what makes it special.

The overall impression that the small details convey is what will win you that award. A custom dash from Redline Gauge Works was helpful; to the untrained eye, it appears to be entirely stock. In fact, this car frequently has that theme. If you weren’t paying close attention, you would miss 90% of the aftermarket details, right down to the big fat tires. However, given that this 1968 Dodge Charger demands attention, that is unlikely.

The engine is a large 528 cubic-inch HEMI, and Jamie Passon of Passon Performance built the transmission, which has four speeds. This 4-speed replica made of aluminum saved weight and avoided the need to modify the trans tunnel to accommodate a 5- or 6-speed. This car’s suspension, which was purchased from Reilly Motorsports, is another weight-saving feature. Their tubular K-frame up front has an entire AlterKtion suspension kit. A triangulated 4-link with adjustable coilovers is used to place the rear tires in the mini-tubbed wheel wells. The suspension reduced the nose’s weight by a total of 90 lbs.

Shawn referred to the blue 1968 Charger as one of his favorite Strope vehicles at the start of this episode. By the time it was over, it was also ours.
